Fushi Valerian
We all lead such busy lives, with scarcely enough time to fit it all in. The fast pace and stress of modern living totally frazzles the nervous system. With so much to do just switching off and relaxing, or even dropping off to sleep, is a real challenge for many of us. This is where Valerian steps in, having been used for thousands of years as a sedative and relaxant.
The ancient Greeks, including father of medicine Hippocrates himself, testified to Valerian as a remedy to insomnia and anxiety, and there is good evidence of it being used across Europe as far North as Sweden, for hundreds of years. In the wild Valerian is a perennial flowering plant, with vivid sweet smelling flowers in the summer months. It is common across Asia and Europe, and has also been introduced in the USA.
The science behind valerian root as a herbal remedy
Valerian contains many compounds that may contribute to sedative effects, and the science supporting its potency looks promising. These compounds include actinidine chatinine, shyanthine, valerianine, and valerine Gamma-aminobutyric acid, known as GABA, and Isovaleric acid. Many experts believe the amino acid GABA, which has strong interactions with the cerebral nervous system, is the key component.
It is thought that Valerian naturally boosts the GABA levels that occur in the brain, and this produces a sedative effect helping reduce brain activity and allowing users to drop off more easily. The overall effect is the inhibition of excess nervous transmission, which is very calming.
Valerian is great for treating anxiety- relax, unwind, and enjoy being calm.
